No irony involved. Simply put, these forums were made 'voluntarily' as they didn't necessary had to be born. It is just nice that the ones that arranged all of this were kind enough to bring life into the forums where the game can be discussed, questions answered, etc.

A mods job however isn't all bells and whistles as 'great power needs great responsibility'. Most will question authority and perhaps make havoc and animosity for small things, while sometimes the havoc and animosity come when needed, however that is due to discussions becoming more of high animosity arguments as opposed to a calm discussion (banter has it's extent) What I'm saying is one doesn't need to 'curse enough that would make a sailor blush' to get a point across. Clarity is a key factor of a mod, as well as the ability to make decisions and have good judgment.

These things I know by analysis of the mods, some are liked more than others. If anything though this forum is better than most sources as other sources can be poorly organized. Hence order in that sense must be made as well. Not to mention being willing to aid others

I may seem like I'm ranting, flame all ya want if you don't like it, but that is the lowdown on things to some extent. This will give an idea of things at least

Yeah, creating a thread asking how you become a moderator isn't exactly going to do you well. If The Godfather see's you fit to be a moderator he will contact you.

Generally, in most forums and I am sure this one is no exception, to have a chance at being a moderator you'd need to of been here a great deal of time (since 2008 for example) have mostly non spam posts on the forum and type with at least half decent grammar and spelling (typing "you" instead of "u" would be a start). Also helping out the current moderators by reporting rule breaking topics posts for example may also do you good as it shows that you can (help) uphold the rules of the forum, but still with that being said, even then it isn't garantee'd that you'll be choosen to be a moderator. Also, your goal shouldn't be to set out to become a moderator on a forum.

You have only been here since April of this year, you would still have to prove yourself. And here's a tip; never, NEVER ask if you can be a moderator. As that can acturally do you more harm then good.

Don't mind me Matt H, just combining our posts as we seem to have covered all the parameters of the issue :)I have been a moderator on other sites than this and here is the lowdown on being a moderator.

First and foremost is to be as helpful as you can to other members.

Observe the rules and don't be afraid to remind others kindly of the rules if they forget them. Helping the other mods by showing them issues that they might have missed is helpful as well.

Don't expect to be made a mod because if you do you will likely be disappointed. Good mods are wiz's at seeing through BS and we can usually tell if your sole purpose at doing things is because you are trying to be a mod.

And last but not least... Don't become a mod. this is the most thankless and stressful position on a board.

Few mods are Fascists or on a power trip. If they are then they are not mods for long.

We work hard to keep the forum bullies, elitists, trouble makers and cheaters from taking over the forum.

We have to watch for spammers and deal with those who insist we are out to get them.

We have to try to put into words the wishes of the forum administrators and tend to fail miserably. We have to try to inject logic into conversations where logic has little bearing on the opinions of the posters, and keep those posts open long enough so that we do not get accused of closing a thread because we wanted to stifle the opinion of the posters. We still get accused of that even though the posts keep rehashing the same points ad nauseum.

For every one thank you, we get fifty "you suck"'s. We do not get paid for this it is only a voluntary position and anyone who believes we are on power trips, there is no power in being a moderator on a board like this. I am a sysadmin at a facility that has two thousand users. I don't need nor do I want any more power because power brings stress and lots of it.

We have to peruse and monitor hundreds of posts a day and we have lives away from mobsters and this forum. We cannot be on all the time. We often do not have time to sit and converse with members as much as we would like because we have jobs and families and spend what time we have on this forum putting out small fires and some large ones. We have had several members leave the forum because they felt we were too harsh and many have returned and told us that this forum was better moderated than the ones they went to.

We often give warnings or infractions to members then remove them if the member tells us they understand or that they made a mistake.

Our job is to keep these forums from devolving into anarchy so those that need help can get it without feeling like they are being bashed or bullied when they ask a simple question.

Our job is to make sure that the right posts go into the right forums so that questions can be answered as quickly and as helpful as possible.

The most difficult job we have is to facilitate conversations between members so that arguments do not rule the board, and as the board get larger it becomes more difficult.

We try hard to do our job well and unfortunately most people do not realize the sacrifices we make to try to keep things on an even keel.

Maybe I should have said 'shortened lowdown' but yes Gio, you've covered what I missed (or what I didn't go into detail with as I was vague in areas. Me in rant mode though is never a good thing :p )

Mendokusai Sennin
06-19-2009, 09:52 PM
Well, that too, if anything though, I can only give logic, Gio has the voice of experience, therefore he can cover more ground on this issue than I can naturally.

Hm... A third eh? Indeed....

As I said though, in the end, if not for the mods, we wouldn't have a forum and without a forum, well.... We'd all be elsewhere I'd imagine...

I don't want to be a mod but I really do wish someone would take the add me thread and get it under control. I wish people in the add me thread would only post once and not every other post it gets really annoying when you go through there trying to add everyone to get more mobsters but over half the pages you try to add are the SAME mobster! and DON'T even get me started on the threads in there. Yes I'm guilty starting one to put my name out there because of the above reason. Oh and I think everyone should be forced to learn how to insert links straight to the add me. My computer breaks down and starts crying when its forced to go to a page with a million gifs and songs on it.

Giovanni
06-20-2009, 09:55 AM
The add forums are kind of left to there own demise because we would be in there 24/7 and unable to do anything else on the boards. The add forum is one place we could really use an eye on the ground, so if you see something that violates the forum rules there please report it.
