When I invite someone to join my mob, and they accept, am I automatically a member of their mob as well, or does one "reciprocate"? I searched the forums for an answer, maybe it's just too dumb a question?

Yes. when you join theirs they join yours and vice versa. Each person's mob count increases by 1.
